• The finals are set for the IHSA girls state track meet in Charleston. Salem freshman Chloe Harness cleared the opening height of 9 feet in the pole vault preliminaries, but couldn’t advance to the finals. Moving on were Stephanie Jacobs of Freeburg along with teammate Ella Siebenberger and Julia Lasley of Anna Jonesboro. Salem sophomore Taylor Gillett failed to get to the finals of the discus throwing it 100-5. In the finals will be Carbondale’s Sydney Apgar and Kelly Pottorff of Triad.

  • The SC Storm Chasers 13u tournament continues today at Webster Field and Farina City Park with pool play games. Bracket play will be held on Sunday. Teams playing this weekend are South Central, Salem, TTown, Mudcats, Bullets, Effingham, Aviston, Prairie Fire, The Slam, Robinson, The Hitman and Clark County.

  • In regular season play, the Salem 12u swept a pair of games. They beat Carlyle 13-6. Armoni Dempsey doubled and tripled, Josh Powless and Gavin Zimmerman added triples with Jalen Inlow and Coen West doubling in the win. Zimmerman and Powless drove in 3 runs each, Dempsey added 2 RBI with runs drivin in from Inlow, Aden Bass and Tanner Ballard.

  • The Salem Wildcats beat Mascoutah for the first time since 20-11, knocking off the 26-4 Indians on the road 4-0. Salem played flawless defense behind starting and winning pitcher Max Phillips. The senior went the distance allowing 6 hits. At the plate Salem got RBI from Nate Roth who was 3-4, Brett Whitney and Nick Hess who each went 2-3 and Zach Livesay.

  • Salem hosted the Track and Field boys sectional yesterday. Mascoutah won the team event with 89 points followed by Marion with 67 and Freeburg 54. Centralia was 7th with 38 points, Mt Vernon 8th with 37 and Salem 11th with 23. Salem freshman Logan Rubin won the Long Jump going 21-3.5 edging Brendan Meng of Freeburg. Salem’s Hayden Wimberly was 2nd in the 800 in 1:56.91 and also advanced in the 1600 with a 5th place finish in 4:28.00.

  • The Salem Lady Cats fell at home to Carbondale 10-1. Kaitlyn Maxey doubled for the Lady Cats, Gracie Smith was 2-3 with the lone RBI with hits also coming from Hannah Minton and Delaney Kell. Rachael Forehand took the loss working the first 2.2 allowing 3 hits and 2 earned runs. Kell worked 4.1 scattering 6 hits allowing 3 earned runs and struck out 4. Salem returns to action today when they close down the regular season with a road game at Mt Vernon.
