• The Centralia Orphans will once again play in the IHSA playoffs as the selection committee will announce the Week 10 pairings later on Saturday evening. The Orphans finished up a 7-2 season with a 42-14 win over visiting Mascoutah on Senior Night at Evers Field.

Gibault takes on Waterloo at Civic Memorial at 11, Carbondale hosts Carterville at 1, Mahomet Seymour welcomes Mattoon at 11, Marion hosts Anna Jonesboro at 11, Columbia and Triad play at 10 from Mascoutah and Mt Zion hosts Rochester at 10.

  • Franklin Park handed out their Fall Sports Awards this week. Charlie Hunter won the Cy Young Award for best pitcher for the Bobcats baseball team that reached state this season for a 2nd straight year. Hunter Daniels won the batting title.

  • The Salem Lady Bobcats fell to Effingham 32-10. Katelyn Biegeleisen had 8 points to lead the Lady Bobcats. Avery Bass scored 2 points but pulled down 8 rebounds. The Salem JV lost 40-13. Ava McLean led the way with 4 points. MacKinzie Mann and Maya Susmena had 2 steals each.

Salem is 2-6 coming off a win over Freeburg last weekend while Effingham sits at 7-1 with their lone loss coming in week 1 to Mater Dei by a single point.   • Centralia’s Michelle Lynch finished 1-2 at the state girls tennis tournament yesterday dropping her opening match to Kelsey Neville of Antioch 6-0, 6-1. Lynch followed that up with a win over Alane Bratt of Dixon 6-0, 6-0 before falling in the 2nd round of the consolation bracket to Aly Cullotta of Woodstock North 6-1, 6-1.
