The Mt. Vernon Register-News is shutting its doors. The three-time a week paper that had a circulation of 3,100 printed its last paper Tuesday. The weekly McLeansboro Times-Leader that is co-owned with the Register-News will also shut its doors.

The newspaper, in a story on its website, blamed local economic challenges. A total of 12 employees are affected.

The group publisher of CNHI Amy Winter says the company tried to keep the papers open with operating efficiencies, including outsourcing printing and reducing the number of days of publication from six to three days a week in 2017.

The Register-News' heritage dates to 1884 with the founding of the Mt. Vernon Daily Register. The Mt. Vernon Daily News was established in 1891. The two merged in 1920 as the Register-News. The Times-Leader dates back to an origination date in 1855.
