A 32-year-old Mt. Vernon man led a Marion County Sheriff's Deputy on a high-speed chase early Sunday morning that ended with the suspect crashing into a ditch at the Route 161 and Schwartz Street intersection.

Deputies arrested Duston McCowen of Wildrose Road in Mt. Vernon for aggravated fleeing of police, unlawful use of a weapon, illegal possession of a weapon by a felon and driving on a suspended license.

Deputies first attempted to stop McCowen on the Bundyville Road. The chase continued onto Route 161 east of Centralia at speeds up to 100 miles per hour before McCowen crashed while trying to turn onto the Schwartz Road.

Deputies say neither McCowen or a female passenger that was released without being charged was injured in the crash. A sawed-off shotgun was reportedly found in the vehicle leading to the weapons charge.

McCowen was taken to the Marion County Jail where he remains pending a first appearance in court on Monday afternoon.

The chase began at 1:30 Sunday morning.
