The Marion County Coroner's Office, in conjunction with the Illinois State Police and with the assistance of the Marion County Sheriff's Office, are investigating a fatal car/horse accident which occurred early this morning on IL 161 Extension, approximately two miles west of Iuka Road.

Coroner Troy Cannon says that an eastbound passenger car driven by 78-year-old Ronald Stuber of rural Iuka struck a large horse in the roadway just before dawn. The impact of the animal caused fatal injuries to Stuber's passenger, his 51-year-old son Jeffery W. Stuber, also of rural Iuka. Jeff Stuber was pronounced deceased at the scene by Coroner Cannon shortly after 6:00 a.m.

The driver, Ronald Stuber, sustained minor injuries in the crash and was taken to Salem Township Hospital where he was treated and released.

Cannon says Jeff Stuber appears to have died instantly from multiple blunt force trauma injuries and estimates the mature horse weighed approximately 1,500 lbs.

The investigation into the circumstances of the crash continues by the Illinois State Police.

Marion County ESDA, Iuka Fire Protection District, and Marion County EMS all assisted at the scene.
