A fire in a couch outside the window of a Salem home started a fire that spread up an outside wall to the attic early Tuesday morning.

Salem Fire Chief Roger Mann says the fire was at the Michelle Rybacki home at 221 South Marshall Street. He reports flames were showing from the northeast corner of the home upon their arrival. Mann says there was considerable damage to a portion of the attic in the two story home.

The State Fire Marshals office has been called in to try and determine how the fire in the couch began. There was no one at the home when the fire started.

Salem Firemen received the call at 1:44 Tuesday morning. They were joined on the scene by Odin Firemen who responded with mutual aid. The last fire trucks cleared the scene at 3:30 Tuesday morning. No injuries were reported.
