(CENTRALIA)-A registered nurse who works in the Emergency Department at SSM Health St. Mary's Hospital has been honored with the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses.

Michelle Martin has worked at St. Mary's Hospital for over 20 years and was honored for her care and compassion, being an incredibly good listener, and being extremely empathetic.

The award is part of the DAISY Foundation's program to recognize the super-human efforts nurses perform every day, and is sponsored locally by SSM Health St. Mary's Hospital Foundation.

The Director of Emergency Services at St. Mary's Hospital, RN Susie Robbins, says Martin clearly demonstrates the criteria set forth by the DAISY Foundation, noting she demonstrates a love of patient care and the nursing profession and so richly represents the SSM Health healing power of Presence.

The DAISY celebration included a presentation of a special sculpture by the DAISY cheering team, a certificate, a banner which is now housed in the emergency department to indicate a DAISY recipient works on the unit, and cinnamon rolls. Cinnamon rolls are part of the traditional celebration because it was the only food which J Patrick Barnes would eat when hospitalized.

The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation was established by a family member in memory of Barnes who died at the age of 33 as a unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families. DAISY stands for diseases attacking the immune system.

Anyone can nominate an extraordinary nurse; nomination information and forms are located in the St. Mary's Hospital cafeteria.
