Veterans Day Being Celebrated Day Early By Many

Special Program Planned Saturday in Centralia; Free Lunch in Salem

Veterans Day isn't officially until Saturday, but since most government offices are not open on Saturday the federal and state holiday is Friday.

In addition to federal and state offices, area courthouses and Salem and Centralia City Hall will be closed. Trash pickup will not be impacted in either city. Most schools also have the day off.

Centralia's traditional Veteran's Day program will be held at 10:30 Saturday morning at the Centralia VFW on South Pine Street. Ten veterans chosen from letters submitted by friends and relatives will be inducted into the Wall of Honor. The guest speaker will be Centralia native Fred JR Johnson, the author of the book Five Wars. A light lunch will follow the program. Everyone is welcome. The annual program is sponsored by the Sutherland Garnier Funeral Home and Cremation Center.

The Salem American Legion will hold a free spaghetti dinner for veterans from 11 to 2 on Saturday at the American Legion building. The public is also welcome. The cost of the meal to the public is $10 for adults and $5 for children.
