The Centralia Police Department reports two of the 21 retail businesses that sell tobacco products sold to minors during the latest compliance check completed Thursday.

The businesses that sold were the Caddy Shack on North Poplar and the Family Dollar on North Elm Street. The clerks, Beau Shanks at the Caddy Shack, and Kimberly Eckhoff at the Family Dollar Store were issued citations for sale of tobacco to a minor and given a notice to appear in court.

Lieutenant Greg Dodson says the City of Centralia has been educating tobacco retailers on minimum-age tobacco laws and the importance of verifying the age of their customers while conducting compliance checks of area tobacco retailers.

Dodson congratulates the retail managers and clerks of the businesses who denied the sale to the minors. He notes the importance of keeping tobacco out of the hands of our youth is extremely important. 90% of current adult smokers stated their addiction to tobacco started before they were legally able to purchase the product. Studies have also identified tobacco as a gateway drug for youth leading to more Illicit drug use.
