Tennis: Orphans beat Althoff...Salem's Miller signs with SIU-E.
5/15/09 @ 7:00:16 am

The Centralia Orphans got a big win ahead of this weekend’s South 7 Conference in Belleville.  Yesterday Centralia knocked off Althoff 5-4 as Corey Meyer and Devin Bates grabbed a 6-0, 7-6 (7-3) win in No. 3 doubles to score the 5th point of the afternoon.

Congratulations Amanda Miller who officially signed to play tennis at Division 1 SIU-Edwardsville next season.  Miller didn’t even pick up a racket until her freshman year, but advanced to state her sophomore, junior and senior seasons and helped the Lady Wildcats to a 40-4 overall mark last fall, the best in school history.  Miller joined the Saturday Sports Showcase last weekend and when asked what she needed to work on moving forward, Miller expressed that she thought she had all the skills, but needed matches under her belt to build experience.  Salem Coach Bernie Bryant, who just completed his final season as head coach for Salem, says Miller’s work ethic is one of her greatest assets…that and the fact she can hit a top-spin forehand better than most.
