Quebecor Building Demolition Plans Moving Forward
2/1/10 @ 11:25:47 am

The demolition of the Quebecor World building on the Selmaville Road is moving forward.

A contractor has now been hired for the job and the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency has cleared the building for demolition with one special provision.  The agency is requiring 5,225 square feet of nonfriable asbestos be removed or not disturbed.  The asbestos is in a glue used under flooring tile in an office area.

Salem Public Works Director John Pruden has informed the demolition contractor, McCloughan Contractors of Springfield, that once proper documentation from an Illinois licensed asbestos inspector regarding removal of the material is received, a demolition permit can be quickly issued by the city.  However, until that time, Pruden says no work will be allowed to be initiated on the property.

Seed America, which obtained the building as a donation from Quebecor, earlier announced plans to tear down the 700-thousand square foot building that has fallen into serious disrepair.  President Joe Johnson feels the property can better be marketed with the building gone.

An ad has been posted on Craigs List seeking those who would like to purchase the steel walls of the building for reuse at another location.  The demolition contractor has already provided the certificates of insurance required for demolition contractors.
