Congressman John Shimkus will face both a Republican challenger in the primary as well as a Democratic challenger in November. Michael Firsching of Moro has filed petitions to challenge Shimkus in the February primary, while former challenger Tim Bagwell of Olney will try again to defeat Shimkus in the November election.
No additional candidates filed for 107th District State Representative, where Republican incumbent John Cavaletto will face a political newcomer Joshua Qualls of Centralia, a Democrat, in the November General election.
Associate Judge Michael McHaney picked up a Democratic challenger in the final day of candidate filing in his race to replace retiring Judge Kathleen Moran. He will face a challenge from Tom Finks of Taylorville. A third Democrat also filed to replace Judge Michael Cody. Michelle Coady of Taylorville joins Stewart Freeman of Breese and Stephen Friedel of Vandalia in the primary. Republican Douglas Jarman of Hillsboro has also filed for the seat. Voters across the Fourth Judicial circuit that includes Marion, Clinton, Fayette, Clay and five other counties will elect the two new judges.
No additional candidates filed to replace retiring Marion County Circuit Court Judge David Sauer. Democrats Keith Kessler, Mike Reed, Matthew Wilzbach, and Eddie Veltman will square off in the primary election, while Mark Stedlin of Centralia has filed as a Republican. Democratic Associate Judge Dennis Middendorff is unopposed in his bid to replace retiring Clinton County Resident Circuit Court Judge Patrick Hitpas.
Clinton-Marion-Washington County Regional Superintendent of Schools Keri Garrett is also unopposed for reelection.
