Illinois Budget Problems Continue
7/1/09 @ 3:23:51 pm

(Springfield, IL) -- The next round of budget negotiations in Springfield could be tough. The state's legislative leaders are not impressed with Governor Pat Quinn's last minute handling of Illinois' budget showdown. House Republican Leader Tom Cross says he didn't like the Governor's tone when he blasted lawmakers for not voting for his tax increase. Cross says he didn't need to be told what "adults do." His Democratic counterpart in the House, Speaker Mike Madigan says he still is giving the Governor some good will. But wouldn't speculate for anyone else. The toughest crowd though, seems to have been the Illinois Senate.

GOP boss Christine Radogno says she sees "calamity" if Governor Quinn doesn't accept a month-to-month budget. But she says it does not appear that's an option he's willing to consider. Democratic Senate President John Cullerton is baffled by the Governor's tough talking speech, and mixed messages. He's sent the Senate home till next week, despite that fact that the state doesn't have a budget. Rank and file lawmakers also say they didn't need a lecture from the Governor, and would have rather heard a speech that proposed a new compromise.
