Health Department gets help enforcing smoking ban 4/15/09 @ 3:12:08 pm
The Marion County Health Department now has more ammunition in its fight to stop smoking in public places. Environmental Health Director Melissa Mallow explains the purpose of the resolution approved by the Marion County Board Tuesday night.
“It will give us a little more leverage in enforcing the Smoke Free Illinois Act. Obviously, we know there are several bars in the county that allow smoking in the evenings and with this ordinance, we will be able to pull the food permit from the bars that are permitting smoking,” said Mallow.
The resolution is part of a renewed effort to enforce the Smoke Free Illinois Act. Centralia Police have issued a number of tickets to liquor establishments and patrons. Changes in the law that went into effect at the beginning of the year also allow the health department to issue tickets for violations.
