Law Enforcement Committee OKs new fence at jail
4/9/09 @ 3:22:26 pm

The Marion County Board's Law Enforcement Committee wants to move forward with fencing the parking lot south of the jail and east of the Public Service Building. Sheriff Jerry Devore wants the area to be fenced so there is a secure area that prisoners could be moved in the event the jail has to be evacuated. The low bid for the work was submitted by Jarnigan Fence of Odin for just under $9,500. Gates would be installed to allow vehicles to still use the lot for parking. They would be closed in the event of an emergency. Board member Ervin Hahn had concerns about liability for damage to parked vehicles by prisoners, but other committee members noted the inmates would be cuffed and under the control of armed guards. They also noted the chance an evacuation would be needed would be rare.
