NFL-PRESEASON
Commissioner to meet with Roethlisberger...Backup Leftwich hurts knee
UNDATED (AP) - NFL commissioner Roger Goodell will meet with Pittsburgh's Ben Roethlisberger today to discuss reducing the quarterback's six-game suspension to four. Goodell has said he would make a decision after the preseason concludes regarding a possible reduction of the suspension.
Roethlisberger was suspended in April under the league's personal conduct policy and is not eligible to return until Oct. 31 at New Orleans, unless the suspension is reduced.
Meanwhile, Steelers quarterback Byron Leftwich, expected to start during Ben Roethlisberger's suspension, injured his left knee during the first half of their final exhibition game, a 19-3 win over Carolina. If Leftwich can't play in the Steelers' Sept. 12 opener against Atlanta, coach Mike Tomlin might have to go with third-stringer Dennis Dixon as his opening day QB.

Giants win duel by the bay...26 runs and six ejections in Florida...Reds lead by eight
UNDATED (AP) - Tim Lincecum outdueled Colorado fireballer Ubaldo Jimenez and the won his first game since July 30 as the San Francisco Giants nipped the Rockies 2-1 in an old fashioned pitchers duel. The victory moves the Giants within three games of slumping San Diego in the NL West.
Pinch-runner Darren Ford scored the go-ahead run from second base on a wild pitch and throwing error in the eighth inning. That helped Lincecum end a career-worst five-start skid and win his first game since July 30. He's 12-and-9.
Ubaldo Jimenez fell to 17-and-6 after he failed for the fifth time at a franchise-record 18th win. He lost his third straight start.

In the rest of the NL:

The Florida Marlins scored 14 runs in the first three innings and routed the last-place Nationals 16-10. But the game was merely a backdrop to a benches-clearing brawl in the sixth inning that resulted in the Nationals' Nyjer Morgan and Marlins pitchers Chris Volstad and Jose Veras and manager Edwin Rodriguez among six ejections. This was payback from Tuesday night when Marlins catcher Brett Hayes sustained a separated shoulder in a 10th-inning collision with Morgan in what the Marlins thought was a dirty play.
The Cincinnati Reds finished their three-game sweep of Milwaukee 6-1. Ryan Hanigan's pinch-hit, three-run homer in the seventh was the big hit. Sensational Cuban left-hander Aroldis Chapman hit threw two pitches in the eighth inning clocked at 103 miles per hour in his second straight unhittable performance.
St. Louis Cardinals' skid continues. Hunter Pence smacked a three-run homer to help Houston to a 5-2 win, handing the Cardinals their fifth straight loss. St. Louis has dropped 13 of 16 and now trail first-place Cincinnati by eight games in the NL Central.
September call-up Brandon Allen had an impressive 2010 debut with Arizona, hitting a grand slam and making several rangy catches in left field to help the Diamondbacks send the reeling San Diego Padres to their seventh straight loss, 5-2.
Roy Oswalt and two relievers combined on a three-hitter and the Philadelphia Phillies used leadoff homers by Jimmy Rollins and Shane Victorino in the first two innings to beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-1.
Kosuke Fukudomehad three hits, including a go-ahead double, to lead the Chicago Cubs to a 5-3 win over Pittsburgh.
Tommy Hanson won for the first time in nearly two months, allowing just one hit in seven shutout innings to lead the Atlanta Braves past the New York Mets 4-1.

In the AL:

Danny Valencia's one-out single in the 10th inning drove in Michael Cuddyer from second base and gave the Minnesota Twins a 2-1 victory over the Detroit Tigers. The Twins kept their four-game lead over Chicago in the AL Central.
Rookie Mitch Moreland homered again and the Texas Rangers kept pulling away in the AL West, beating the Kansas City Royals 4-3. The Rangers have a 9-1/2 game lead over Oakland in the AL West.
Paul Konerko's three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning lifted the White Sox to a 6-4 win over Cleveland and a three-game sweep. Manny Ramirez got into the lineup for first time since Chicago claimed him on waivers earlier this week. He had a single in three at-bats.
The New York Yankees stay one game up in the AL East by nipping Oakland 4-3. A.J. Burnett bounced back from an awful August by pitching six effective innings as the A's fell to 1-and-8 against the Yanks.
Tampa Bay kept pace by nipping Toronto 2-1. Evan Longoria snapped an eighth-inning tie with an RBI single to help David Price post his club-record 16th victory.
Marco Scutaro and Adrian Beltre homered in a six-run seventh inning and the Boston Red Sox beat Baltimore 9-6. Jon Lester improved to 13-and-0 lifetime against the Orioles.
