Centralia came out strong taking a 10-0 lead to start the game. Cierra Cunningham put in 8 in the first quarter to help the Annies extend their lead. Maddy Pea hit consecutive 3-pointers to cut the lead down to four and that is the deficit Salem would face after the first quarter 14-10.
Salem outscored Centralia 50-32 the rest of the way including 19-8 in the 2nd quarter to take a 29-22 lead at the break.
Katie Meador was a beat for the Lady Cats. The 5-foot-9 sophomore put in a game high 22 points to go along with 11 rebounds and 7 steals. Meador also featured a perimeter game she says she's been working on all summer. Hittinga trio of 10-foot jumpers off the dribble, Meador has added to her all around game after showing she is a force underneath.
Also a force last night was the defensive effort of Kirstie Owen. The 5-foot-3 junior guard held Annies leading scorer from a year ago, junior Hannah Shores, to 0 points in the opening half and just 10 for the game. Owen also put in 11 points for Salem who forced 20 turnovers. "It's been a long time since we haven't pressed and strictly ran a half-court man-to-man defense, and I think we played it pretty well," said Holst.
Lexi Hester was also in double figures with 10 points while Maddy Pea added another three pointer in the 2nd half to finish with 9 points.
Cunningham led the way for Centralia with 15 points, only 3 in the 2nd half. Salem and Centralia will each finish up pool play on Saturday. Salem will play Belleville East at Noon followed by Pana at 8:30. Centralia get's Pana at 1:30 and Belleville East at 7:00.

The Lady Cougars will join their boy counterparts tomorrow night for their annual spirit night with this year’s theme “South Central has a flashback!” The event will take place at the South Central High School Gym in Farina beginning at 6:30. Admission is free, but the cheerleaders are asking that you bring in a can of food, which will be given to the local food pantry.
Also last night in girls basketball, Nashville opened the game on a 9-0 run and held on to beat Wesclin 50-43.

Flanagan leads group of 4 RLC baseballers to continue career next season.

Warrior pitchers Patrick Flanagan and Luke Shuemaker (Paducah, KY) are two of four Rend Lake College baseball players who have committed to fouryear programs. Salem grad Flangan has signed to play at Bradley University in Peoria and Shuemaker to Murray State in Kentucky. They are also two outstanding student-athletes in the classroom and on the diamond.
The 6-3 Flanagan threw 70 innings, allowing 30 runs on 52 hits for an ERA of 3.86 as a freshman in the spring. He walked 29 batters and struck out 52 for a record of 3-and-5 on the mound while maintaining a grade point average of over 3.25.
"Patrick's fastball topped out a 94 this fall on two separate occasions, " said coach Tony Etnier. "HIs fasbtall has a lot of arm-side run, and he has a good slider and a good changeup. He'll pitch as our ace in the spring."
Shuemaker - a 6-2, 19-year-old with a GPA above 3.5 - hit well for the Warriors last spring. He finished the season with two homers, five doubles and 13 RBI on 31 hits. Shuemaker earned a batting average of .242 in 128 trips to the plate and struck out nine batters in 21 innings from the mound.
Also playing at the next level is Belleville East grad AJ Martin with the University of Indianapolis and pitcher Tomas Rodriguez committing to Mid-Continent University in Kentucky.

Conklin scores 31 in win at Carmi...Iuka takes title, Selmaville takes 3rd at OBC girls tournament.

JH BB – Nick Conklin scored 31 points in Salem’s 60-53 victory over Carmi on the road last night. LOUIS - The Rams welcome former QB Kurt Warner and the defending NFC champion Cardinals to the Edward Jones Dome Sunday.
Arizona overcame an early 14-0 deficit to notch a 31-20 win over the Seahawks last Sunday. Kurt Warner threw for 340 yards and two touchdowns for the Cards, who have won five-of-six to move to 6-and-3 on the year.
The Rams hung with the unbeaten Saints for four quarters last week before suffering a 28-23 home loss to New Orleans. Steven Jackson had 176 yards from scrimmage and a TD for the Rams, who slipped to 1-and-8 with the loss.
The Cardinals have won the last five meetings between the teams. Yesterday the Rams asked the NFL for a 24-hour extension to sell their remaining tickets and avoid a TV blackout.
Meanwhile, defensive end C.J. Ah You suffered an ACL injury in practice Wednesday and is out for the season.

Eagles battle Bears on Sunday Night Football.
CHICAGO - A pair of teams going in the wrong direction will colide in Chicago when the Bears host the Philadelphia Eagles on "Sunday Night Football."
The Eagles are coming off a 31-23 loss to the Chargers in San Diego. Donovan McNabb was 35-of-55 for 450 yards and two touchdowns for Philadelphia, which has dropped two straight to fall to 5-and-4 on the year. Brian Westbrook suffered his second concussion of the year in last week's loss and will not play this Sunday.
Meantime, the Bears were 10-6 losers to the 49ers last Thursday night in San Francisco. Jay Cutler was intercepted five times for Chicago, which has also lost two in-a-row to slip to 4-and-5 on the season. Chicago clipped Philadelphia 24-20 when the teams met last year on "Sunday Night Football."

Ricky Williams puts pounding on Panthers.
CHARLOTTE - Ricky Williams and the Miami Dolphins are looking nothing like the team that opened the NFL season 0-and-3.
The Dolphins are back in the playoff mix at 5-and-5 after Williams ran for 199 yards and scored Miami's three touchdowns in a 24-17 triumph at Carolina. He scored on a 46-yard run moments after the panthers pulled within 17-14.
Williams came through a day after the Dolphins learned fellow running back Ronnie Brown would miss the rest of the season.
DeAngelo Williams had 122 rushing yards for the 4-and-6 Panthers.

Wilson willing to make changes.
BUFFALO - Bills owner Ralph Wilson tells The Associated Press he's prepared to revamp his entire football operation after the season and warns that no position is safe.
The 3-and-6 Bills already fired coach Dick Jauron Tuesday and replaced him with defensive coordinator Perry Fewell, who will serve as interim coach the rest of the season.
Wilson says he's open to making a lucrative offer to land a high-profile coach, although he discounts reports that the team is interested in interviewing former Denver Broncos coach Mike Shanahan.

Also in the NFL:

Chris Simms took snaps with the Broncos' starters again Thursday, making it increasingly likely that he will start against San Diego on Sunday in place of Kyle Orton. Denver's No. 1 quarterback left last week's loss to Washington after spraining his left ankle and didn't return.
The undefeated New Orleans Saints might be without running back Reggie Bush for Sunday's game against Tampa Bay. Bush has missed two practices this week due to swelling in his knee after he ran for 83 yards and scored two touchdowns in St. Louis last Sunday. Saints coach Sean Payton would not say Thursday what Bush's chances of playing are this Sunday in Tampa Bay.
Washington Redskins running back Clinton Portis will miss his second straight game this weekend as he recovers from a concussion. Portis has not been able to practice since he was injured in a helmet-to-helmet hit against Atlanta.

Weeden threw for 168 yards and two touchdowns in the second half in a 31-28 victory against Colorado. His 28-yard touchdown pass to Justin Blackmon with 8:11 remaining proved to be the winner.
The outcome allowed Oklahoma State to keep pressure on No. 3 Texas in the Big 12 championship race. The Longhorns would have clinched the Big 12 South with an OSU loss.

Weis decision won't come until after season.
SOUTH BEND, Indiana - Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick plans to make a decision on the future of coach Charlie Weis within days of the season's end. The Fighting Irish host Connecticut on Saturday then play at No. 14 Stanford in the regular-season finale on Nov. 28. Swarbrick says the evaluation of Weis is an ongoing process.

Kansas looking into Mangino allegations.
LAWRENCE, Kansas - University of Kansas officials have begun to talk with former players about allegations of abusive behavior by football coach Mark Mangino.
Former Jayhawks receiver Raymond Brown recalled Thursday how in 2007, Mangino began yelling at him and said "I'll send you back to St. Louis where you can get shot by your homies." Mangino's alleged comment came a few days after Brown's younger brother was wounded in a shooting near his home in St. Louis.
Brown and another former player also told the AP that Mangino made insensitive comments about a player's father being an alcoholic.

Carpenter, Wainwright snubbed as Lincecum wins NL Cy Young...Cubs sign Grabow, trade Heilman.

NEW YORK - The Cardinals lost out on a postseason award for the second straight day Thursday.

Cubs sign Grabow, trade Heilman.
CHICAGO - The Cubs agreed to a two-year deal with left-handed reliever John Grabow on Thursday. Although financial terms of the deal are not known, the "Chicago Sun-Times" reported it be worth seven-million-dollars with an official announcement coming as soon as today.
After being acquired last season from Pittsburgh, Grabow posted a 3.24 ERA in 30 appearances with Chicago. He set a career-high with 75 games with both the Pirates and Cubs. Grabow, who would have been one of the most sought-after left relievers had he hit the open market, had spent the first six-plus seasons of his big league career with the Pirates.
He is 20-and-15 lifetime with six saves and a 4.03 ERA in 420 games.
In other team news, the Cubs traded pitcher Aaron Heilman to the Diamondbacks in exchange for pitcher Scott Maine and infielder Ryne White.

Gasol sparks Lakers by Bulls in season debut.

LOS ANGELES - Pau Gasol scored 24 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in his season debut as the Lakers beat the Bulls 108-93 at the Staples Center.

Tracy received 29-of-31 first-place votes, while La Russa, who guided St. Louis to a 91-win season and the NL Central title, received the other two. The Dodgers' Joe Torre was third.

After making just four combined starts in 2007 and 2008, Carpenter came back to post a 17-and-4 mark and a league-best 2.24 ERA.

Rams-Cards in danger of blackout:
ST. LOUIS - If local fans want to see Sunday's Rams-Cardials game, they'll likely have to be in attendance this Sunday at the Edward Jones Dome.

Last week, the Rams were close enough to a sellout to be granted a 24-hour extension by the NFL. They did wind up selling out the game, which was shown on local television. This would be the first game in five home dates this season that did not sell out.
