  • Bette Louise Henderson, 94, of Centralia, passed away April 20, 2018 at her home in Centralia. Bette was a member of the First United Methodist Church. During her younger years she worked with her father at the Pfeffer Feed and Seed company on N. Oak St. in Centralia as well as the Centralia Township Assessor's office. She was an avid Cardinal fan and a supporter of the Humane Society. She hosted many card clubs and neighborhood get-togethers. Her senior year of high school was marked by two big events: the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the Centralia High School basketball team winning the Illinois state basketball tournament. In grade school at the old Central School, she was good friends and classmates with Centralia basketball legend Dike Eddleman. She often helped tutor him in his studies and homework.

  • Robert Edward Kroetz, age 91, of Mt. Vernon, IL, formerly of Salem, died April 20, 2018, at SSM of the Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon. Robert was retired from Singer Sewing Machine-Sales and Service in Mt. Vernon. Following retirement, he handled sewing machine repairs at his home in Salem. A true outdoorsman, he loved to fish, and play darts. A veteran of both WW II serving in the United States Marines, and in the U. S. Army during the Korean War, he was definitely a very proud Marine.

  • Calvin George Schermann, age 92, of Salem, IL died April 20, 2018, at his home in The Manor at Salem Woods, surrounded by his family. Calvin retired from Carp's, a general merchandise retail as the Regional Supervisor. He loved baseball, especially the St. Louis Cardinals, gardening, and fishing. He was a member of St. Theresa of Avila Catholic Church in Salem. He faithfully served his country in the United States Army during W.W. II. Honorably discharge July 2, 1946, from Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas. A Platoon Sergeant, he served in France, Germany, and Czechoslovakia with the 30th Infantry Regiment for approximately 17 months. He was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge and served in the Rhineland and Central European campaigns. He had charge of a rifle platoon consisting of approximately 40 men.
