  • Herschel Clarence Kasten, aged 81 years, passed away peacefully at his home on October 19, 2017 after some months of convalescence due to illness. He served in the U.S. Army in Korea right after hostilities ended, where he drove a Jeep and was a cook. He drove a Jeep, he said, because his height prevented him from fitting in while marching. He learned how to cook good gravy, both tasty and abundant enough to keep little mouths from asking too much about that excuse he gave for not marching. Early in his career he worked at Rockwell International in Centralia and taught Vo-Tech at Odin High School. For most of his working life he both farmed and was owner-operator of Hardwood Survey Stakes in Hoyleton. Herschel was a graduate of Nashville High School and held a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. He served as a member of the Kaskaskia Junior College Board of Trustees for 26 years. He held a private pilot’s license and loved flying. On their 50th Wedding Anniversary he and Judy got a motorhome and spent some winters in various parts of the sunny South.
