• Berniece Swan, age 76, of Salem, died Saturday, November 11th, at 8:40 am at her home. She started her career at March Drilling and worked a number of places as an office administrator, recently retiring from the Marion County Farm Bureau after 17 years. She was a 1958 graduate of Salem Community High School, grew up being active in the Zion United Methodist Church before Marrying Don and becoming a member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church where she served on the council for a number of years and as treasurer for 25 years. She was active in the Happy Hearts Quilt Guilt in Salem and Marion County Home Extension.

  • Betty L. Buck, 83, of Opdyke went to be with the Lord surrounded by her family at 6:50 A.M. November 11, 2017, at SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital in Mount Vernon, Illinois. Betty and her husband lived in Virginia and North Carolina for 22 years as Ted served in the United States Air Force. Betty was a faithful, loving wife and spent her time raising and making a home for their family. Betty insisted upon teaching her family about the Lord and the necessity of worship and living according to the standards of her Lord and Savior. Betty taught Girl Scouts in North Carolina and was active in the Air Force Chapel in Goldsboro, North Carolina. Betty loved her flower garden and spent many hours cultivating and nurturing her flowers.

  • LaVerne Isaac, 94, of Mount Vernon, Illinois passed away at 8:00 A.M. November 9, 2017 at her residence. LaVerne worked various jobs throughout her life, including the Mount Vernon Shoe Factory, Mount Vernon Garment Factory, Hollywood Candy Factory in Centralia, Illinois, and Hunt’s Restaurant in Mount Vernon. She was a member of Central Christian Church, as well as a 50 year member and past Matron of Mount Vernon Chapter 223 Order of Eastern Star. LaVerne was very creative and enjoyed quilting, sewing, and ceramics. She loved her yard and flowers, but most of all, LaVerne loved her family. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.

  • JoAnn Phillips Wahlstrom, age 92 of Salem, died November 9, 2017 at her home. Her life was rich by many blessings. Before her marriage she was the president of the Lutheran Organization at Southeast Missouri College in Cape Girardeau. Later she worked as a hostess at a resort (Idlewild) in Sturgeon Bay, WI, and was the office manager at Shady Lane, a dining and summer playhouse near Belvidere and was president of the Belvidere Teachers Association. After she married Keith she was a member of the Pink Lady Auxiliary at Salem Hospital and a member of the Salem Woman’s Club. JoAnn received her BS degree in Education from Southeast Missouri State College majoring in Biology and Mathematics. She taught high school classes at numerous schools including Cobden, Belvidere, Wheaton, Salem, Il, Memphis, TN, and Greenfield, OH. Keith was a manufacturer representative and during the summer months she would travel with him. JoAnn and Keith were always together, sharing many of the same interests. JoAnn loved all her students, farming, dogs and reading many scientific issues. Her great love was her family, her brothers, sister, nieces and nephews.

She was a Senior Saint and a member of Main Street Theater. Betty was awarded Outstanding Woman of Illinois. She was the Founder of Angels on Assignment and First Day Singers. Betty had a special interest in genealogy, astrology, the arts, and humanities.

  • Wilhelmine "Willi" Timmons, 96, of Centralia, IL, passed away on Tuesday, November 7, 2017, at SSM St. Mary's Hospital in Centralia, Il. Wilhelmine spent twenty one years in Rockford, IL then moved to Centralia where she spent the rest of her life. Mrs. Timmons was a member of Demaree United Methodist Church and a lifetime member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW in Centralia. She spent over one thousand hours graciously volunteering at Marion Hospital and Nursing Home, and was a lifetime member of the National Home for children. Wilhelmine was a natural caregiver and nurturer, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and aunt. She will be deeply missed by all her family, friends, and those to whom she brought joy.

  • Richard Hulen Garren, age 75 of Centralia, passed away Tuesday, November 7, 2017, at SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon.Richard served in the United States Navy. He worked at the Local 520 IUOE as a Heavy Equipment Operator for 50 years. He was a member of the Centralia Masonic Lodge 201 and served as a Wamac Alderman. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and making knives. His greatest enjoyment was spending time with his family and friends.
