She was a faithful member of the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Salem serving as a Sunday school teacher and secretary. Doris served many roles in the Republican Party and in the community from Township Board to county board. Doris was co-owner of the Village Shop in Salem and retired from the Department of Veterans Affairs after 25 years. She enjoyed spending time with her family, friends and campaigning for the Republican Party.

  • Richard A. Neff, age 75 of Central City, passed away Friday, October 13, 2017, at SSM Health St. Marys Hospital in Centralia. Richard graduated from Centralia High School. He worked for Warren G. Murray Developmental Center in Centralia as a Truck Driver for 35 years. He was a member of St. Mary Church in Centralia and was the past President of the Booster Club at St. Mary's School. Richard was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, where he served as Grand Knight, Downstate Athletic Director, Tootsie Roll Chairman for 40 years, and he received the Membership Award. Richard enjoyed playing golf, softball, deer hunting, playing pool and bowling. He will be remembered for his jokes and one-liners. His greatest enjoyment was spending time with his family and friends.

Nellie graduated with a Master’s Degree in education from Southern Illinois University Carbondale. She taught high school for 2 years at Cobden High and then at Mount Vernon Township High for 35 years until she retired. She was the Department Head of the home economics department. She was a member of the Mount Vernon Retired Teachers Association at the county and state levels. She was a member of Southern Illinois Earth Science Club, Logan Street Baptist Church for 64 years, Mount Vernon Eastern Star Chapter 233, and the Daughters of American Revolution – Goshen Trail. Her greatest joy was helping people and even continued to do so after her life by being an organ donor.

Jerry retired from Local 520 Operating Engineers, UMWA Construction Workers and owned and operated Jerry’s Auto Body in Bluford for several years. He enjoyed fishing, bird-watching, and gardening, especially raising tomatoes. Paw Paw loved spending time with his granddaughter, Delaney, and will be remembered as being “generous to a fault”. He never met a stranger and generally enjoyed being with people. He was a loving husband, father, friend, and Paw Paw and will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
