• Betty F. Evans, 85, of Junction City, passed away Wednesday, December 13, 2017 at Oakridge of Plattsburg, MO. Betty retired from Murray Center after working there for 32 years. After 2 years of retiring, Betty began to work for the Community Resource Center which she worked for 17 years and retired again at the age of 83. She was a member of the Sandoval Christian Church for over 20 years at which was known to play the organ and she recently became a member of the First Christian Church in Centralia and their Young Adults Sunday School Class.

Ann was a Registered Nurse at Good Samaritan Hospital, an instructor at Rend Lake College, and the director of nursing at Jeffersonian Nursing Home. She was a member of Logan Street Baptist Church and volunteered for Hospice of the Good Samaritan. Ann’s greatest joy was being with her family and helping others.   • Freddie Eugene Dent, age 87, of Nason, Illinois passed away at 2:18 P.M. December 15, 2017 at his residence in Nason, Illinois. Fred worked in the Nason coal mines at 18 years old before he proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War from 1952-1953. He went on to work as welder maintenance for Fisher Body/General Motors for 34 years. Fred was also the owner of Bubba’s Place in Nason for 28 years. He was a member of Amvets, VFW, Ducks Unlimited, and United Auto Workers. Fred enjoyed watching Nascar and the Saint Louis Cardinals in his spare time. His greatest joy was spending time with his family. Fred was dearly loved and will be missed by all who knew him.

  • Gary Eugene Stover of Mt. Vernon, IL went to rest with his Lord and Savior on December 16, 2017. Gary started out as a butcher for Dodson’s Grocery and then was well known as a baker at King’s Bakery and continued his passion for cake baking from home throughout his life. He was Production Controller at General Radiator and later was City Inspector for Mt. Vernon. Gary was a pillar to his family which extends to his brother, George Robert (Linda) Stover of Mt. Vernon, a sister-in-law and two brothers-in-law, many nephews, nieces and friends that were like family.

Liz was born May 31, 1940 to John and Opal (Flick) Chappell in Odin, IL. Liz retired from Downers Grove School System District 58 with 30 years of service. Gardening brought her joy through the years. She truly enjoyed caring for her family and friends. From her birth to her death, she was loved for her kindness and patience. In 1992, Mrs. Kozanecki retired from Franklin Life Insurance Company of Springfield, Illinois, having served as the company’s Vice President of Underwriting. She was a Fellow of the Academy of Life Underwriters and a Fellow of the Life Office Management Association. Mrs. Kozanecki was a member of Southwest Christian Church where she served in various capacities. She was also a member of the Board of Trustees of Cubb Prairie Cemetery and the Jefferson County Historical Society. She was Organizing Regent of the General John A. Logan Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the Union and a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Carmine had lots of friends, and was loved by the staff at Doctors Nursing Home as he had been a resident there for three years.   • Harold Lee Gentz, age 88, of Centralia, Illinois, formerly of Aviston, Illinois and Sesser, Illinois, passed away at 1:25 A.M. on Thursday, December 14, 2017 at home with his family by his side. Mr. Gentz was of the Catholic faith. He was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church in Aviston, Illinois, where he was a member of the church choir. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving his country during the Korean Conflict. He was a clerk stationed at an Air Force Base in Newfoundland. He enjoyed making rugs out of burlap sacks with each having his own design on it. He cherished the time he spent with his family, especially his children and grandchildren. Mr. Gentz was chairman of the Clinton County Bicentennial Commission membership who voted and set-up the Clinton County Historical Society that was organized in 1976. He was the first president of the historical society. In 1985, he was active in efforts to raise money to purchase the Sidney Breese Home in Carlyle to house the Clinton County Historical Society Museum. As a result of his love for history, he restored monuments in Lake Branch Cemetery, an old Civil War Cemetery outside of Aviston, Illinois. Mr. Gentz was an American History and English Teacher who taught at Breese Central High School from 1974 to 1995 and Aviston Community High School from 1958 to 1974. He graduated from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale with a Master’s Degree in History and a Bachelor’s Degree in English. Mr. Gentz was an antique dealer for many years. He was also a quilt dealer who pieced them together and sold the completed quilt to a dealer in New York. He lived in Centralia, Illinois for the last 2 years and previously lived in Avistion, Illinois and Sesser, Illinois.
