Rangers Want to Keep Jurickson Profar On the Field

Robert Binder/MLB Photos via Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- Texas Rangers second baseman Jurickson Profar is one of the brightest/youngest hitting prospects in baseball, which is why the team will do whatever it takes to keep him in the big leagues.

Profar was originally called up because of an injury to second baseman Ian Kinsler. Kinsler returned from the disabled list recently, leaving Profar in limbo. Instead of sending him back to Triple-A, the team will try using him in the outfield.

The team wants to use Profar in a super-utility role in order to keep his bat in the lineup. Rangers manager Ron Washington also said he wants to make Profar a "functional left fielder."

Profar has never played outfield in his professional career, but the team will give him a week or so to learn the position and see if he can make a successful transition.

The 20-year-old Profar has hit .276 with two home runs and 24 hits in 23 games so far this year. The experiment has already begun as Profar was the team's designated hitter Monday night against the Oakland Athletics. Hitting leadoff, Profar went 1-for-4 with an RBI.
