NFL Suspends Referee for One Game

Doug Pensinger/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- The NFL has suspended umpire Roy Ellison without pay for one game following accusations that the official made a vulgar and derogatory statement at Washington Redskins lineman Trent Williams last weekend.

Williams alleged that Ellison made the comments during the first half of the Redskins contest against the Philadelphia Eagles last Sunday.

Teammates of Williams backed the claims that further accused the official of using a racial slur.

The NFL released a statement on Friday claiming that Ellison violated a part of the leagues collective bargaining agreement with referees that says “at no time will a game official engage in any conduct which adversely affects or reflects on the NFL”.

“The NFL imposed its judgment upon (Ellison) without consideration of all the facts,” Michael Arnold, the NLFRA’s legal counsel said in a statement. “The decision was arbitrary and unjustified and will be challenged with an immediate grievance.”

Williams has also been accused of shouting derogatory statements towards the official but denies those claims.  Ellison will be able to return to work for Week 13.
