Jeff Gordon Wins Pole for Watkins Glen
(WATKINS GLEN, N.Y.) -- Jeff Gordon won the pole for Sunday's Sprint Cup race at Watkins Glen.
Gordon had a lap speed of 129.466 mph that got the job done and gave him his third pole for his career at Watkins Glen, and 75th of his career.
Gordon has four career wins at Watkins Glen and two wins this season.
Marcos Ambrose, who doesn't have a win this season, followed his Hendrick Motorsports teammate and Jimmie Johnson finished with the third fastest qualifying time.
"I wish Jeff was a little kinder to me to let me get the pole," said Ambrose, who needs a victory to make the Chase and is at the track where he's the odds-on favorite. "It was a pretty good lap, though, and I will take it. You have to be happy with front-row starts."
