(NEWARK, N.J.) -- The New Jersey Devils rebounded from an early 1-0 deficit, as it beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-1, to take over first place in the Eastern Conference.

Brandon Sutter scored 1:23 into the first period, giving the Penguins the lead. The score stayed that way until late in the second period when rookie Stefan Matteau scored his first NHL goal, tying the game at one.

In the third period, the Devils (7-1-3, 17pts) who had whiffed on their previous six power-play opportunities, scored twice on the man advantage.

Martin Brodeur, who had 24 saves in the victory, reached a milestone by playing in his NHL record 1,200th game.

The loss snapped Pittsburgh's (8-4-0, 16pts) five-game winning streak.
