Angels Top Red Sox in 19 Innings

Rob Carr/Getty Images(ANAHEIM) -- In the longest game of the season to date, Albert Pujols sent the home crowd home happy with a walk-off home run in the bottom of the 19th as the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim defeated Boston 5-4 early Sunday morning.

The game took a total of 6-hours and 31-minutes with 558 pitches being thrown by nine different arms. The Angels (68-48) had stranded 16 batters through the first 18 innings before the solo shot from Pujols.

"I had the opportunity twice to give the team the lead and I didn't come through, but you just need to stay positive all the time and look for a pitch to hit," said Pujols. "I did, and I put my best swing of the second half on it."

Pujols originally gave his team the lead with a two-run double in the bottom of the first before the Red Sox (51-65) scored three runs in the seventh to take the lead. Los Angeles knotted the score in the bottom of the eighth on Mike Trout's solo homer.

Boston plated the go-ahead run in the top of the 14th on a David Ortiz sacrifice fly but the Angels loaded the bases with nobody out in the home half of the inning. Trout again provided the tying run with a fielder's choice, helping to set up Pujols' heroics.

"A game like this can hopefully turn things around for us. And if that's the case, it's worth it to play 19 innings," Pujols said.
