49ers Trade Alex Smith to Chiefs
Dilip Vishwanat/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- The San Francisco 49ers have traded quarterback Alex Smith to the Kansas City Chiefs, a league source told ESPN NFL insider John Clayton.
Smith was the No. 1 pick by the 49ers during the 2005 draft, but lost his job to Colin Kaepernick after suffering a concussion in November. Kaepernick would go on to lead the 49ers to a Super Bowl appearance, which they lost to the Ravens.
"We're going to look at all options available," 49ers general manager Trent Baalke said at the NFL Combine last week regarding possibly trading Smith. "He is a pro's pro, have nothing but great respect for him."
Smith has thrown for 14,280 yards with 81 touchdowns and 63 interceptions in 80 career games. The Chiefs will have the No.1 pick in the 2013 NFL Draft this April.
