(SOUTH BEND, Ind.) -- Notre Dame was staring at another loss. Then they turned the game into an instant classic.

25th-ranked Notre Dame edged 11th-ranked Louisville, 104-101 in five overtimes on Saturday night.

Notre Dame (19-5) was trailing by seven with over a minute left in regulation before Jerian Grant took over. He scored 12 points in a span of 48 seconds, including a three-point play to tie the game at 60 before to send the game into overtime.

From there, it was overtime after overtime. "I talked about it being a 15-rounder and taking punches and being put on the mat," Irish coach Mike Brey said. "At the fourth or fifth timeout I said, 'Has there ever been a 20-rounder?' "

The Fighting Irish got a big boost from transfer Garrick Sherman, who scored 17 points and pulled down six rebounds, all during the overtime periods.

Eight players between both teams fouled out, and Eric Atkins logged 60 minutes of game time for Notre Dame. Atkins also scored a layup late in the fifth overtime to put the Irish up for good.

The matchup marked the longest regular-season Big East conference game in history.

Louisville (19-5) got 30 points from Chane Behanan, but missed 18 free throws as a team.
