Darren McCollester/Getty Images(WATERTOWN, Mass.) -- Police have a suspect in custody in Watertown, Mass., and the FBI are "aware of the law enforcement activity in the greater Boston area."

Watertown police have blocked off at least one town street and multiple police cars, ambulances and fire trucks are on the scene.  Police described the investigation in Watertown as "an active scene" and one person was taken into custody, but they did not say what for.

"We are aware of the law enforcement activity in the greater Boston area.  The situation is ongoing.  We are working with local authorities to determine what happened," the FBI said in a statement.

Federal law enforcement sources say the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are involved in investigating the ongoing Watertown incident along with state and local authorities.

There is no information definitively linking the ongoing investigating in Watertown to Monday's Boston Marathon bombings.

A Massachusetts Institute of Technology police officer was fatally shot Thursday night near a building on the university's campus in Cambridge, Mass.  There is no word if the investigation in Watertown is connected to the MIT shooting.
