Charges Filed in 9/11 Anniversary Attack in Benghazi

STR/AFP/GettyImages(WASHINGTON) -- Nearly 11 months after the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya, was attacked, federal prosecutors have filed charges against militia leader Ahmed Khattalah.

He is the first person charged in the assault that left Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans dead on September 11, 2012, the 11th anniversary of al Qaeda's terrorist strikes in New York and Washington, D.C.

In addition, a number of other people have also been named as suspects in the Benghazi attack in charges that are still under seal.

Khattalah has been linked to the militia group Ansar al-Shariah and told the Global Post last year that he was in Benghazi on the night the consulate came under siege.

The incident has become a political football for President Obama and the State Department, with Republicans accusing administration officials of failing to provide adequate protection before the attack, failing to come to the aid of the consulate during the assault, and then claiming initially it was not related to terrorism.
