Bernhard Goetz Arrested on Marijuana Charges

Stan Honda/AFP/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- About 30 years after his notorious shooting of a group of teenagers on a Manhattan subway train, Bernhard Goetz now faces drug charges.

According to the New York Times, Goetz, 65, was arrested on Friday after he attempted to sell a small amount of marijuana to an undercover police officer. The officer reportedly approached Goetz in Union Square and asked if he was selling. Goetz responded affirmatively before heading to his apartment. When he returned to Union Square, he was arrested.

In 1984, Goetz was riding on the subway when he was approached by four teenagers who asked him for the time, a cigarette, and a few dollars. Goetz told police that he feared he was going to be robbed, prompting him to pull out an unregistered gun and fire five rounds.

Goetz was acquitted of attempted murder charges in 1987, but was found guilty of weapons possession.

Goetz was arraigned on Saturday on charges of possession and sale of marijuana, the Times reports. He was released on his own recognizance.
