Young Lady Cats Fall In Opener

By Toby Gullion

(SALEM) - The Salem Lady Wildcats dropped their opener of the season in the 12th annual Salem Thanksgiving Tournament 57-52 to Centralia.

Salem forced the Annies into 36 turnovers but offensively couldn't get into a flow until the fourth quarter.  In a game that featured over 70 free throws, the Annies took advantage of 28 makes in 42 attempts and Salem shot just 13 of 31.

Annie Tucker scored 8 of her team high 11 points in the fourth quarter before fouling out.  Dearria Watson also had a solid fourth quarter scoring all 10 of her points in the final 8 minutes.  Morgan Hawkins was also in double figures with 10.

Centralia was led by their big's inside.  Abbey Holtkamp scored her game high 19 to lead the way followed by Danielle Meadows with 12.  Each would foul out late in the fourth quarter forcing Centralia to make free throws to seal the victory.

The young Lady Cats routinely had three freshmen and a few sophomores playing together in a rotation that featured every player on the roster.  Salem showed signs of nerves early, but also flashed signs from some of their young group that figures to pay off with some seasoning.

Salem will have little time to rest as they will play a pair of games on Saturday starting at noon with a matchup against Highland.  Salem will then play the nightcap at 8:30 against the Teutopolis Wooden Shoes.

-- In the opener, Carlyle got a free throw from Paige Rakers with 8 seconds left to lift them to a 51-50 win over Civic Memorial.

At the Alton Tournament:

Belleville West 56, Cahokia 34

Breese Mater Dei 63, Alton 36
