Salem To Face Mt Vernon Tonight

By Toby Gullion

(MARION) - The Salem Wildcats (0-2) prepare to take on a miffed off Mt Vernon Rams squad (1-1) tonight in the night-cap from the Pyramid Plus Tournament in Marion.

Coming off a surprising 46-41 loss to the upstart host's, the Rams will be looking for someone to take it out on as they enter play at 8pm tonight.

For Salem, they can build off of the play of point guard Alex Phillips, who despite the game being well in hand, took the ball to the basket and scored a game-high 17 points in a 68-37 loss to the Collinsville Kahoks.

Salem will need to find another ball handler to take the pressure off of the senior, and that could be 5-10 junior Donte Rush, who despite not playing much with the ball, did show signs of explosiveness in spurts.

Listen online tonight or on 100.1 FM WJBD beginning at 8pm with Bill Hawley and Toby Gullion.

(FARINA) - The South Central Cougars opened up their season at home with a 46-26 loss to Vandalia.  Fischer Tharp scored 16 points to lead all scorers.  The Cougars are heading on the road Tuesday at St Elmo.  Vandalia will play in the DuQuoin Tournament next week.

(RAMSEY) - The Christ Our Rock Silver Stallions (2-0) are one win away from playing for the Ramsey/Mulberry Grove Tournament Championship after their 50-49 overtime win over Ramsey.  In the other game, Jake Orrell led Patoka with 19 points in their 59-46 win over Cowden Herrick.

Girls Basketball:

(SANDOVAL) - The Sandoval Lady Blackhawks showed up ready to play as they pounded Marissa 53-19 at home.  The girls have had trouble finding their offensive game according to the coach, but finally came around before the holiday break to add a W to their record.  Kylie Parson had 18 points and 8 rebounds to go with 3 steals.  Kristin Perkins had 10 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals.  Sandoval resumes to action as they travel to Christ Our Rock on Monday.

(EFFINGHAM) - Neoga jumped out to a big lead in the first quarter and cruised to a 67-22 opening round National Trail Conference Tournament win over South Central.  The Lady Cougars dropped to 0-3 on the season and will play in the consolation semifinals Friday night at 5:30 at St Anthony High School.
