Salem Southwest Downed by SteelvilleThe Salem Southwest Wildcats couldn’t hold an early lead in their 3-1 loss to Steelville Sunday at the Gator Classic in Trenton.
Salem scored their lone run in the first inning after consecutive singles from Nick Conklin, TJ Alberson, and Jared Banning. Banning’s RBI
grounder scored Conklin. But the Wildcats didn’t get another hit until the fifth inning when Jon Kingery singled and Wyatt McGhee used his speed to bunt for a hit. Those were the only hits for Salem.
TJ Alberson pitched a complete game for Salem, scattering just four hits while striking out seven. Only two Steelville runs were earned as Salem committed two errors in the field.
Alberson and the defense retired five straight Steelville batters early in the game and sat down straight straight in the middle of the contest before a hit batter got on for Steelville with one out in the fifth.
Salem held a 1-0 lead until the bottom of the fifth frame when Steelville hitters had back-to-back doubles that brought two runs across. Steelville tacked on another run in the sixth.
With the loss, the Salem Southwest team is now 9-4. Salem will try to bounce back tonight when the Cats host Altamont’s Junior Legion squad,
