Salem Post 128 Advances To State Following Gem's By Consolino & Martin

BETHALTO - The Salem Post 128 Jr Legion team is state-bound following 2 wins yesterday at the 5th Division Tournament in Bethalto.  Salem opened with a 12-1 rout of Newton.  Zach Consolino was solid and gave up nothing after a first inning run.  Cole Steward had the big hits for Salem all day as he finished with 4 hits and 5 RBI, Rowdy Hensley also added 3 hits.

That set Salem up with a winner's bracket final against Orient who had just defeated Breese Gray 16-1.  Salem's Riley Martin was locked in a pitcher's dual against Orient's ace.  The bad guys got up 1-0 after 6 innings, but Salem never gave up and scored a run of their own in the 7th to force extra innings.  That's where we stayed until the 10th when Levi Davis came through with a 2-out, 2-run double to give Salem a 3-1 victory.  Riley Martin tossed one of his best games in his career as he went over 8 innings.  Brendan Boles worked the final 2 innings for the win.  Martin's outing was so impressive that when Jeff Malone came to put Boles in, the fans from Orient gave the junior-to-be south paw a standing ovation.

Salem advances to the Jr Legion State Tournament held in Belleville this weekend.  All that's left is a game tonight at 8pm with Breese Gray to determine the top two seeds for the tournament.  Congratulations to Coach Malone, assistant Jared Storment and the rest of Post 128 as they improve to 32-5 on the season.
