Salem Hosts Mater Dei in Regular Season FinaleThe Salem Lady Wildcats have one opportunity left to finish
the regular season with a winning record, but basketball is only a part of the
reason to pack BE Gumm Gymnasium when Salem hosts Mater Dei tonight.
Tonight is the Third Annual Cancer Awareness Night, and
Salem fans will be decked out in pink for breast cancer or purple for
pancreatic cancer. There will be other fund raisers tonight at the game,
including the selling of the shirts worn during warm-ups Monday night. The
proceeds from those shirts will go to Iuka pre-K student Katie Crouch in her
continued battle with the rare ocular cancer known as retinoblastoma.
Head Coach Janet Holst says 3rd Annual Cancer Awareness Game shirts will be available for purchase at the game tonight.
Tonight is the final home game for the Lady Cats as they
begin postseason play Monday night in the Centralia Regional. The question on
everyone’s mind is this: Which Salem team will show up to play tonight? Will
Salem show up mentally focused and with the swagger of a team determined to end
the regular season with a win, or will they come out flat and unfocused as they
have in their last two home games, losses by a combined 55 points?
As Holst stated after the team’s most
recent loss Monday to Carbondale, this team has all of the tools and all of the
potential to be more than a .500 team. The fact is this team should have
already reached the coveted 20-win mark.
This game is potentially the first of two meetings with the
Mater Dei Lady Knights in the next six days, as Mater Dei awaits the
Salem/Centralia winner in the regionals. For Salem, tonight provides a unique
opportunity to send a message to the vaunted Mater Dei squad by sending them
back to Clinton County with a loss. That message would easily resonate with
every other team in the regional tournament who has seen Salem be inconsistent
