Salem High Cross Country Team Advances To StateThe Salem High School Boys Cross Country Team is going to state. The team finished fifth at the Edwardsville-Metro-East Lutheran Cross Country Sectional on Saturday to advance to the state meet next Saturday at Detweiller Park in Peoria.
Senior Elliot Brinkmeyer led the Wildcats, finishing 17th with a time of 18 minutes flat. He was followed by Junior Quinton Goostree who finished 24th, Sophomore Brenner Webster who was 26th, Sophomore Kyle Rogers who finished 43rd, Senior Nathan Helm who ran 55th, Senior Michael Owens who was 75th and Junior Caleb Willman who finished 105th.
Freeburg won the Sectional with just 68 points. Sparta was second with 102 points, Herrin third with 147, Edwardsville (Metro-East Lutheran) fourth with 150 points, and Salem fifth with 165 points.
Jacob Marler of Freeburg was the top runner, finishing the course in 16 minutes 41 seconds. Corbin Kakac of Fairfield qualified for state by finishing fourth overall and Reid Rinella of Greenville by finishing fifth individually, and Ben Strobel of Vandalia by finishing sixth overall.
