Salem Freshman Throws One Hitter In First Varsity StartA Salem High School freshman threw a one-hitter during his first start for the varsity Wildcat Baseball team on Saturday.
Riley Martin held Mattoon hitless until the final inning and struck out 12. Salem won the game six to nothing.
The victory earned a split for the Wildcats in the double header. Mattoon won the first game two to one. Zack Tate pitched a complete game for the Wildcats in the first game and allowed only three hits in the loss.
The loss was the first of the season for Salem in Apollo Conference play. They currently lead the conference with a 5-1 record. The 'cats are 10-9 overall. They next play the Orphans on Tuesday at 4:30 pm in a game at Sprehe Field in Centralia.
