Lady Cats Drop to 0-5 After Centralia Game; Carlyle Wins Salem Tourney
SALEM – Salem freshman Dearria Watson exploded for nine points in the fourth quarter, but Salem couldn’t overcome a 12-point halftime deficit and fell to Centralia 50-35. The loss came in the 7th place game of the Salem Girls Thanksgiving Tournament. Salem lost earlier in the day to Olney 55-39.
Carlyle won the tournament with a 54 to 35 win over Teutopolis. Belleville East took third place with a 48 to 40 win over Highland. Bethalto Civic Memorial was fifth with a 58 to 54 win over Olney. Carlyle's Paige Rakers was named tournament Most Valuable Player. Centralia's Abbey Holtkamp made the first tournament all team. Salem's Morgan Hawkins was on the second team.
The Lady Wildcats, who saw their record drop to 0-5, couldn’t find a rhythm in a game with Centralia littered with 48 total turnovers and 43 combined fouls. Despite improving their turnover margin, Salem couldn’t capitalize on the 22 turnovers committed by the Orphan Annies.
Watson used her nine-point fourth quarter to lead all scorers with fifteen points. No other Lady Wildcat was in double figures. Centralia’s Danielle Meadows and Erica Starr each had ten points for the victors.
Salem returns to BE Gumm on Thursday and will seek their first win as they host Paris.
