Salem Beats Mattoon for Third TimeThe Salem Lady Wildcats beat Mattoon for the third time this season, winning 57-46 at the Home of the Green Wave Thursday night.
Salem jumped out to an early 7-0 lead before Mattoon got on the scoreboard. Kelly Sager's three-pointer late in the first frame vaulted Salem to a 13-7 lead after one. The teams traded leads in the second quarter before Salem grabbed a 30-22 halftime advantage. The Lady Wildcat defense held Mattoon to just four points in the third quarter while the offense scored another thirteen to lead 43-26. Salem had just one field goal in the fourth quarter, but spent a lot of time at the free-throw line, connecting on 12-of-20 shots to seal the victory.
Senior Kyla Cook led all scorers with fifteen points. Sophomores Emily Baer and Maddi Hood were also in double figures, finishing with twelve and ten points respectively for the 13-9 squad.
After a couple of weeks on the road, the Lady Wildcats return home Saturday evening to face the Centralia Orphan Annies. It is Corrie's Team Night at BE Gumm Gymnasium and all fans are encouraged to wear the color orange in support of Corrie Hammond and her fight against MS. The Lady Wildcats will be accepting pledges for donations based on the number of free throws they make in the contest, and will also accept flat donations to benefit Corrie's Team.
