Rams Top Wildcats on the PitchThe Mt. Vernon Rams scored a goal in the first half and added two more after the break to top the Wildcats 3-0 Tuesday in Salem.
The Rams made the score 2-0 on a header off a corner kick. The corner kick was set up after Mt. Vernon threw the ball in from deep in the Wildcat zone. The sideline official signaled that the throw was illegal, but the interior referee did not blow the play dead. Salem senior keeper Jacob Maxey lobbied hard before and after the goal, but to no avail.
Mt Vernon's third and final goal was a beauty, a long kick from 25 yards out that went over a jumping, extended Maxey. The ball nicked the bottom of the crossbar and hit the back of the net.
Salem Coach Cecil Rowe discussed a few areas of improvement as Salem struggled to mount an offensive attack against the Rams.
"We need to be able to control the ball. That's the problem, being able to control the ball, being able to make a good pass, and try to get good timing. If your timing is not good on defense, it's always going to be trouble if you can't close down."
Maxey finished with eight saves, while Colton Spencer stopped the two shots he faced.
Salem travels to Mt. Zion on Thursday.
