Legendary Mater Dei VB Coach Succombs to CancerFormer Mater Dei High School volleyball coach Fred Rakers has passed away after battling cancer for several months.
The former National High School Volleyball Coach of the Year coached the Lady Knights to six state titles, the first in 1987 and his last as head coach coming in 2010. The 2010 squad finished 41-1 and was ranked 26th nationally.
Rakers guided Mater Dei volleyball teams to 1,046 wins in his career, the second highest in Illinois history.
While funeral services are still pending, Chad Rakers says his father's funeral will be held at the Mater Dei gymnasium.
Rakers was 68.
