Lady Wildcats Win Conference Opener(SALEM) - In a game that featured 79 free throws and over 70 turnovers, the Salem Lady Wildcats (1-5, 1-0) opened up defense of their Apollo Conference championship with a 70-51 home win over Paris.
Heather Henson was the catalyst for early success as Salem used an 18-2 run to end the first quarter and took an 18-7 lead. Salem exploded in the second quarter getting a balanced scoring attack and running their lead to over 20 at one point and 35-16 into the halftime break.
90 seconds into the third quarter, Paris coach Shawn Richardson pulled an official aside and at that moment for most of the quarter, everything went the way of the Lady Cats as they frantically got back into the game. Paris in fact had the ball trailing by three, but Salem countered with a run of their own and finished the third quarter leading 50-40.
Down the stretch Salem hit 14 of 22 free throws in the fourth quarter and finished the game 34 of 59. Morgan Hawkins finished with a game high 23 points. Heather Henson added 20. Megan Temples led Paris with 22.
Salem is off until next Thursday when they welcome the Charleston Lady Trojans to B.E. Gum.
