Lady Cats With Inspired Win

By Toby Gullion

(MATTOON) - After speculation as to if the Salem Lady Wildcats would play in the Mattoon Holiday Tournament after the tragic loss of their assistant coach Scott Holst last week, coach Janet Holst's club played inspired forcing 47 turnovers in a defensive effort that would of made their late mentor proud. Salem ran away from Cumberland 59-21 to open up defense of their title from a year ago.

When they weren't shooting layups, Salem used the play of their big's inside with six-foot juniors Annie Tucker and Kyla Cook doing anything they wanted on their way to 14 and 10 points respectively.

Shelby Holst and Maddi Hood added 7 apiece as Salem will take on Decatur MacArthur at 3pm this afternoon.  The Lady Generals were defeated soundly by Mahomet Seymour in the tournament's opening game 64-11.
