Junior High State Baseball/Softball
Clayton Ceglinski's infield single starting the scoring for Salem in the fourth inning followed by a balk that scored Cole Steward to give Salem a 2-0 lead. That would be more than enough for Salem's starter Dalton Courtright.
DC didn't allow a hit until the fifth inning and finished with 11 strkeouts and allowed just 3 hits in the victory. Courtright also added a 2-run single in the sixth to give himself insurance.
Salem advances to take on Waterloo following their 2-1 win over O'Fallon Carriel on Tuesday afternoon at 3pm.
On the other side, Marion defeated Benton 6-2 and Herrin beat DuQuoin 8-1.
In the softball tournament, Marion shut out Benton 11-0, Carterville 7-4 over Johnston City, Carlyle shut out Collinsville 7-0 and Highland beat Dupo 8-2.
PICKNEYVILLE - In Class M at Pinckneyville, Breese advances as they shut out Valmeyer 4-0. Breese will play Trico who defeated Vienna 8-1. On the top side of the bracket Smithton shut out Goreville 5-0. Albion beat Christopher 5-1.
On the girls side, Chester needed just 6 innings to defeat Aviston 13-3. Trico over Hardin County 5-3. Goreville 10-0 in five innings over Lebanon and Christopher beat Fairfield 7-5.
COULTERVILLE - The Class S Tournament is being held in Coulterville. Patoka's Mark Herrin struck out 21 but the Mohawks fell to Century 3-2. Herrin was also 2-3 at the plate with a sac fly, and RBI triple and a single. Belcher was 1-4 and Cain 1-3 with 2 runs scored.
Century moves on to play in the semifinals against St Peter-Paul Waterloo after their 12-2 win over Dodds in five innings.
Creal Springs beat New Hope 12-1 and St Bruno/Tamaroa beat St Ann/TSJ 6-5.
In the softball tournament, Central City routed Dongola 23-0 in three innings. The Citians advance to take on St John Lutheran-Red Bud after their 7-2 win over Thompsonville. On the bottom bracket, Steeleville shut out Woodlawn 1-0 and OLMC-Herrin defeated Noble 12-2.
