ST. LOUIS (AP) - Free throws were critical for fourth-seeded Missouri State in a 53-48 victory over fifth-seeded Illinois State in the Missouri Valley Conference tournament quarterfinals. Freshman Austin Ruder scored 21 points to match a career high. Both teams missed more than two-thirds of their shots. Next up for the Bears is a date with undefeated Wichita State in the semifinals.
ST. LOUIS (AP) - Indiana State and Southern Illinois are set to meet in a semifinal matchup in the Missouri Valley Conference tournament. Indiana State knocked off No. 10 seed Loyola of Chicago 75-52 in the quarterfinals. SIU eliminated Northern Iowa 63-58.
JUPITER, Fla. (AP) - Henderson Alvarez ended last season with a no-hitter. He began this year's spring training with no-hit stuff. Alvareze retired all nine batters he faced as the Miami Marlins beat the St. Louis Cardinals' split squad 7-3. Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright was equally efficient in his first start of spring training. Wainwright faced the minimum in two innings while striking out one.
