Illinois Announces Games with VirginiaCHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) - The University of Illinois has added games against Virginia to its 2021 and '22 football schedules.
Illinois said in a news release Wednesday that it will play the Cavaliers on the road on Sept. 11, 2021, and in Champaign on Sept. 10, 2022.
Illinois Athletic Director Mike Thomas said the games are part of an initiative by the Illini to face what he called peer institutions.
Illinois and another Atlantic Coast Conference school, North Carolina, announced earlier this year that they'll play in 2015 and 2016.
Illinois has beaten Virginia in both of the teams' previous meetings. The Illini won the 1990 Florida Citrus Bowl 31-21 and beat the Cavaliers 63-21 in the 1999 MiconPC.com Bowl in Miami.
