Holiday Tournament Wrap from Thursday
(CENTRALIA) - The Salem Wildcats were defeated in their opener at the 70th annual Centralia Holiday Tournament as Belleville West put a 72-39 win to start tournament play. Alex Phillips had 14 and Nick Conklin 10 for the Cats who fall to 2-8 and will take on Mt Vernon in today’s opener at 8:30 after the Rams fell to Oak Lawn Richards on a 3 at the buzzer 47-44. Centralia will play in the quarterfinals at 7:45 tonight on WJBD with a 47-32 win over Burbank St Laurance. Jerrod Simmons Young led Centralia with 13 and Jake Wood added 11.
Also in tournament play, top seeded Cahokia beat Champaign Central 72-54, Effingham came from behind to beat Alton 46-43. McCluer North was impressive in their 50-40 win over Memphis Raleigh Egypt. 2nd seed Chicago Marist opened with a 56-44 win over O’Fallon.
The Salem Lady Wildcats won two games to open the Mattoon Holiday Tournament with dominating performances. First Salem forced 47 turnovers in a 59-21 win over Cumberland Annie Tucker with 14 and Kyla Cook with 10 led the Lady Cats. 13 lady Cats took part in the scoring as Salem forced another 37 turnovers in a 73-30 win over Decatur MacArthur. Morgan Hawkins had 17 points, Dearria Watson and Cook each added 11. Salem is 6-7 and will take on Mahomet Seymour at 10 am this morning before playing in one of the two championship semifinals tonight. Both games can be heard on AM 1350 and WJBDradio.com.
In other tournament play, Mahomet Seymour opened the day with a 64-11 rout of MacArthur and then defeated Cumberland 79-22. Mattoon defeated St Anthony 39-34. Olney came back from a 12 point first half deficit to beat Vandalia 64-62. Olney defeated St Anthony 48-40.
From Vandalia, Flora improved to 3-0 and in control of Pool A with a 63-40 win over Pana heading into their final matchup tonight with Pana at 8pm. In other action, Mahomet Seymour defeated St Anthony 72-55, Pana over South Central 49-29, Shelbyville nipped St Anthony 52-50, Pana defeated Greenville 63-44 but the Comets did earn an exciting 50-49 win over St Elmo to open the day.
At Mater Dei, top-seed Briarcrest Christian moved to 3-0 with a 51-41 win over Carlyle in the opener. Mater Dei came from behind in a nip and tuck affair defeating Nashville 46-43. Breese Central bounced back after losing the night cap in the opener to beat Chicago Julian 59-48. 10th seed Mascoutah moved to 3-0 with a 53-48 win over Highland and will play Briarcrest today for the Pool championship.
At Sesser Valier, Waltonville moves on with a 71-62 win over Zeigler Royalton and will play Christopher after their 49-44 win over Vienna. Johnston City 64-37 over Century and will play Chester following their win over Marissa 59-39. Sparta moves on with a 63-43 win over Cobden.
From the Dieterich Boys Tournament, Christ Our Rock routed North Clay 80-65. Dieterich beat Beecher City 65-41, Newton beat North Clay 80-67 and also defeated Red Hill by forfeit.
The South Central lady Cougars were defeated by Cowden Herrick at the Dieterich Holiday Tournament 80-18 as Micah Jones scored 44 in the win. South Central will take on North Clay this morning at 10 and Arcola at 1:30.
