Effingham Earns Apollo Win Over SalemThe Salem Wildcats scored the first five points of the game before Effingham started a scoring onslaught that would last them the entire game as the Hearts pick up the Apollo win 71-44 in Salem Friday night.
Donte Rush, Alex Phillips, and some stingy defense helped Salem jump out to the early lead only to see the offense become stifled by Effingham as the Hearts took a 19-9 lead at the end of the first quarter. Salem never reduced the deficit back to single digits as Effingham led 39-17 at halftime and 57-28 after three quarters.
Phillips finished with 12 points as Salem was led in scoring by senior Nick Hempen with 13. Rush ended his night with eight points for the Wildcats who dropped to 2-11 overall and 2-3 in league play.
Effingham's Hunter Keith led all scorers with fifteen points.
Salem plays their second game in as many nights when they host the Mascoutah Indians in a make-up game Saturday night. The JV contest will be at 6:15 with the varsity to follow.
