Cougars Get Upset Win At St Elmo Holiday Tournament

(ST ELMO) - "This is the night we build confidence."  Those were the prophetic words of South Central head coach Rick Simmons before his 6th seeded Cougars took to the court at the St Elmo Holiday Tournament to take on the 3rd seed, Cowden Herrick.

Those words rang in the head of senior 1000 point scorer Fischer Tharp.  The 4 year starter poured in 32 points and fellow senior Rudy Hablewitz scored 8 of his 10 points in the fourth quarter as SC earned the 52-48 upset win.

Tharp scored all but 2 of his points on 15 field goals and also went 2-3 from the free throw line.  The Cougars were 8-11 combined as a team from the stripe.

The victory moves SC into tomorrow night's semifinal against 2nd seed Atlamont after the Indians routed Ramsey 61-31.

The Tournament will continue tonight with a 6:15 elimination game featuring Mulberry Grove and Brownstown followed at 7:45 by the first championship semifinal between the host St Elmo Eagles and Beecher City.

(WAYNE CITY) - Edwards County and Cisne each stand at 3-0 in their respective pools heading into the final two days of pool play from the 59th annual Conrad Allen Holiday Tournament in Wayne City.

Cisne leads Pool A followed by Thompsonville at 2-1, Grayville and Zeigler Royalton are each 1-2 and Webber Township sits at 0-2.

In Pool B, Edwards County is 3-0, Patoka is 2-1, Clay City and Wayne City each are 1-2 with Crab Orchard sitting at 0-2.

Thursday night games will see Clay City and Crab Orchard at 5:30 followed at 7pm by Zeigler Royalton and Webber.  The nightcap will see Patoka taking on Wayne City.
