Chicago St. Pulls Away From S. Illinois 88-84CHICAGO (AP) - Quinton Pippen scored 17 points to lead Chicago State to their first-ever win against Southern Illinois, 88-84 on Saturday.
Chicago State (3-4) built an early 9-point lead in the second half after Matt Ross hit a 3-pointer. Southern Illinois (2-6) immediately rallied, ripping off an 8-0 run.
Every time the Cougars made a run, the Salukis responded to reel them in.
Pippen drilled a 3-pointer to give Chicago State a 60-57 lead with 9:03 left. Desmar Jackson cut the lead to one with a three-point play, but Eddie Denard hit a layup and Pippen netted another 3-pointer to push the lead to 69-63. The Salukis could only cut the deficit to four after that.
Nate Duhon and Corey Gray combined to go 8 for 8 from the line in the final minute. Duhon and Gray each scored 15.
Jackson led Southern Illinois with 22 points while Mike Balogun added 21.
