Area Holiday Tournament Wrap from Friday

The Centralia Orphans will play today in the fifth place semifinals this morning at 8:30 against the Stars of McCluer North after falling to Jacksonville last night 39-30.  Listen this morning with Bill Hawley and Greg Mehochko on 100.1 FM and WJBDradio.com.  Also today in the final four, it will be Belleville West v. Cahokia and Chicago Marist v. Jacksonville.  Other scores from yesterday saw Mt Vernon defeating Salem 74-38 to eliminate the Wildcats, Alton eliminated Champaign Central 64-57. 

The Mattoon Tournament finals are set and Salem will play for their 2nd straight championship following last night’s 54-48 overtime win over the hosts in last night’s semifinal.  Annie Tucker’s turnaround on the left block with 2 seconds left in regulation tied the game and sent it into extra time.  Kyla Cook finished with her best scoring output as a varsity player as she poured in 19 points.  Taylor Smith scored 22 to lead the Wave.  Salem will take on Olney today at 3:30 for the title on AM 1350 and WJBDradio.com.  Mahomet Seymour and Mattoon will be the 3rd place game, St Anthony and Vandalia will play for 5th and MacArthur and Cumberland will start the day at 11 am in the 7th place game. 

At the Mater Dei Tournament, Breese Central defeated Sacred Heart Griffin 62-50, Mater Dei beat Chicago Julian 45-24, Briarcrest is into the title game against Central following their 47-40 win over Mascoutah and 60-51 win over Okawville, Highland beat Carlyle 60-52 and Nashville defeated Julian 38-26. 

At the Vandalia Holiday Tournament, South Central defeated Greenville 53-37 before falling to St Elmo 46-29.  Altamont defeated St Anthony 66-57 and Shelbyville 48-45, Vandalia fell to St Anthony but defeated Maroa Forsyth 62-57. 

At Dieterich, Christ Our Rock defeated Red Hill 47-42 and Newton handed the Stallions their lone pool loss 82-50.  And North Clay also defeated Red Hill 66-48. 

At Carbondale, the hosts defeated East Peoria 57-22, Edwardsville 73-57 over Bartlett, Tennessee, Madison over Carterville 58-40 and in overtime it was Troco over Carnahan, Missouri 61-60. 

In Collinsville, Althoff defeated Riverview Gardens, Missouri 73-66, Belleville East 63-50 over Decatur MacArthur and East St Louis defeated Oakville, Missouri 62-46. 

A big upset at Mascoutah as previously unbeaten Breese Mater Dei was defeated 41-40 in overtime to Okawville in the quarterfinals.  They will take on Breese Central following the Cougar 78-50 win over Carbondale.  On the top side, Belleville East will take on Nashville after each won their games.  Centralia was eliminated 63-49 by O’Fallon and Mt Vernon moved into the consolation semi’s with their 65-17 win over the Annies JV.

At the Dieterich girls tournament, South Central fell to 0-3 with a pair of losses first to North Clay 53-32 and then a 60-15 loss to Arcola.  The Lady Cougars will finish pool play today against Oblong at 10am.
